Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes

There have been teases here and there that Google's Nexus 7 was going to get a full, official accessory treatment from ASUS, but actual details have been scarce. Consider ASUS' cover blown, almost literally. Presentation files finding their way to Nordic Hardware show the known Smart Case-like, $20 Travel Cover that's already lurking on the ASUS and Google websites, but they also spoil a leather Premium Cover that will reportedly cost $40. As for a cradle to round out the set? While the company had previously confirmed that a dock was coming, we're now getting a glimpse of the $50 Nexus Dock's super-simple wedge design and audio output. With the exception of the Travel Cover, the accessory bonanza is pegged by the slides as arriving in late August -- just in time for that last-gasp summer vacation.

Dan Dan Noodles | BeantownEats {We Eat It. You Read It.} - Boston ...

Summers are always busy, and everyone is always on the go. ?When we are home, we tend to grill a lot; simple chicken breast with a side salad and we are happy campers. ?But in the midst of the summer rush, I started missing the kitchen and found myself reaching for one of my all-time favorite recipes. ?It?s certainly not gourmet, and the pictures aren?t even that pretty. ?But I have made this recipe a dozen times over the years and it always hits the spot.

Dan Dan Noodles (adapted from Cuisine at Home)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup dry sherry
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth (can also use beef broth)
  • 3 Tbls peanut butter
  • 2 Tbls soy sauce
  • 1 Tbls brown sugar
  • 2 tsp chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 3 Tbls fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 Tbls garlic, minced
  • 1 package thin stir-fry noodles
  • 1/4 cup red bell pepper, minced
  • 12 oz ground turkey breast (I?m careful to buy ground turkey breast, which is much lower in fat that regular ground turkey)
  • Green onion, sliced

In a bowl (I like to use a pyrex glass measuring cup), combine first 9 ingredients. ?Be sure to whisk so that the peanut butter incorporates into the rest of the ingredients. ?I have found that you can play around with the amounts. ?For example, I had one jar of chili sauce that was very hot and I could only tolerate a small teaspoon. ?The current jar I have doesn?t have that potent of a flavor so I find I add much more than the original recipe calls for. ?I would suggest starting with these amounts, and then tasting it and then altering as you see fit for your taste buds.

This dish cooks pretty quickly and since the above mixture requires quite a few ingredients, I like to get the sauce ready and the vegetables cut. ?Once everything is prepared, heat a medium-large non-stick skillet with a little bit of oil. Place turkey into pan in large chunks and brown on all sides. ?When I first read this recipe, I thought this technique was a little strange but I?ve followed this method whenever I?ve made this dish and it works every time.

Add in red pepper and continue to saute. ?Once peppers are soft, add in the sauce and break apart the turkey breast. ?Bring the sauce to a boil and let simmer until the turkey is fully cooked.

While simmering, add the noodles to boiling water. ?These noodles are so thin they will cook in no time. ?Be careful not to over cook or they will be sticky and a little mushy. ?Once sauce has thickened and noodles are cooked, strain the noodles, spoon the turkey with sauce over the noodles and top with sliced green onions.

I like to make a large portion of this dish, as it reheats well for leftovers but is also great cold. ?I find myself making this during any season and it really has become one of my favorite recipes. ?I have made it with all of the ingredients, but have also managed to improvise when I didn?t have everything at my fingertips. ?I find I use a lot of ginger, and I like to top with a lot of green onion. ?This recipe is very adaptable and after you make it once, you will have a good idea of which flavors you want to taste more (or less). ?Bon appetite!

What?s your favorite go-to recipe?

Romney skips West Bank in Israel-centric visit

Associated Press

Posted on July 29, 2012 at 11:01 AM

Updated today at 11:02 AM

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? The Palestinian president watched from the sidelines Sunday as presidential hopeful Mitt Romney bonded with Israel's leaders in a visit seen by many in the West Bank as an attempt to boost his domestic Jewish support at their expense.

Romney did not request a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, even though his West Bank compound is just 30 minutes by car from the candidate's Jerusalem hotel.

"This is his choice," Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said of Romney's decision to skip the West Bank during an Israel visit that began late Saturday and ends Monday.

Instead, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad traveled to Romney's hotel on Sunday for a meeting.

Palestinian officials declined to be drawn out about the West Bank no-show, suggesting that despite Romney's strong pro-Israel stand, they don't want to stir up tensions with a man who could one day have great influence over their statehood aspirations.

West Bank officials said the main point of Romney's visit is to win the support of Jewish voters in the U.S. "He (Romney) did not come here because he believes that would harm his chances," Hamad said.

Romney's staff said the candidate had time for only one meeting with a Palestinian official.

By contrast, the atmosphere was friendly when Romney met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday. The body language was relaxed, Netanyahu addressed his visitor as "Mitt" ? a casual reference even for informal Israel ? and he did not adopt the lecturing tone he has used with Romney's rival, President Barack Obama.

The two political conservatives share a worldview, and for Netanyahu, Romney's embrace of the Israeli government has been a welcome change from Obama's criticism.

A campaign stop in Israel appears to have become the norm for U.S. presidential candidates. Both Obama and then-rival John McCain made the trip four years ago. Obama found time to meet with Abbas, while Republican McCain also snubbed the Palestinian leader.

Fayyad, a U.S.-educated economist, said before Sunday's meeting that he planned to lay out the Palestinian positions on Mideast peace efforts. As prime minister, Fayyad is responsible for the day-to-day lives of Palestinians but does not play a role in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. The talks broke off in 2008.

Abbas and Netanyahu disagree sharply over the conditions for renewing the talks. Abbas says he will return to the table only if Israel freezes settlement construction on occupied lands and accepts the pre-1967 war cease-fire line as a baseline for border talks, arguing that after two decades of fruitless negotiations, there's no point in talking without a clear framework.

Netanyahu refuses to halt settlement building or recognize the 1967 line as a reference, insisting that talks should proceed without preconditions.

Abbas' refusal to resume talks on Netanyahu's terms has strained his relations with the Obama administration.

There was no immediate word on the content of the Fayyad-Romney meeting.

The Republican candidate used a photo opportunity with the Palestinian prime minister to try to smooth over a gaffe he committed in London, the first stop of his foreign tour, where he criticized London's preparations for the Olympics.

Fayyad just returned from London, and Romney seized that as an opening to gush about the Olympics.

"An entertaining and delightful opening ceremony. Wasn't it spectacular?" the candidate said. "It really was. And the march of nations. There were many participants. And they sent women from every country."

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant involved in team?s counseling program, team has been in contact with NFL office about his arrest

OXNARD, Calif. ? Dez Bryant is involved in the Cowboys? counseling program and team officials have been in contact with the NFL office regarding the receiver?s arrest two weeks ago on a family violence charge involving his mother, owner Jerry Jones said Sunday.

When asked if Bryant has always been involved in the Cowboys? counseling program or this is something recent, Jones responded, ?I don?t know that we?ll go [there]. That?s private stuff that we?re dealing with there.?

Like coach Jason Garrett said last week before the Cowboys departed Valley Ranch, Jones said that it?s ?premature? to say whether the team will punish their talented wide receiver for his arrest. Regardless, Bryant could be suspended by the NFL for violating the league?s personal conduct policy.

Jones called Bryant ?a man among boys? when it comes to his talent level, but added that he?s been disappointed that the Oklahoma State product hasn?t been in the best shape his first two years in the NFL and has struggled with injuries.

?That (injuries) has been the chief limiting thing with us sitting here with a player who is very obvious a major difference-maker in us winning games,? Jones said. ?Now is that going to continue? We hope not. He has had a big off-season relative to his strength and conditioning. He is in the best shape he has ever been.

?I really don?t believe Dez Bryant has been in shape his first two seasons relative to where he could be. That is different now.?

Jones said that he has to invest more time in Bryant than other players on the roster.

?So you certainly couldn?t have 53 players ultimately on your team that you give the kind of consideration and time that you do to Dez,? Jones said. ?But you say, ?Well, a No. 1 draft pick and an outstanding player, why not???

HBT: Orioles' Hammel out at least 3 weeks with knee surgery

Jason Hammel, who has lost four straight starts trying to pitch with a sore right knee, will undergo surgery and miss at least three weeks, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports.

Hammel has loose cartilage floating around in the knee that he needs taken out.

?Where it was before it was kind of uncomfortable,? Hammel said. ?Now it is kind of in the joint, kind of pinned into the joint, so every time I bend the knee it pretty much hits the nerve in the area, so it?s not very comfortable right now.?

Hammel nearly made the AL All-Star team after opening the season 8-2 with a 2.61 ERA, but he?s given up 17 runs in 19 2/3 innings in his last four outings, all of them losses.

The Orioles haven?t announced who will replace him in the rotation, but Tommy Hunter appears to be the likely choice. Even though Brian Matusz pitched a shutout in his first start after being sent down to Triple-A Norfolk, manager Buck Showalter isn?t keen on the idea of bringing him back so quickly.

South Korea postpones military pact with Japan

Home ? World News ? South Korea

By Ben McGrath
13 July 2012

The South Korean government of President Lee Myung-bak faces continuing political turmoil following its last-minute postponement of a military intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan.

The government only told the National Assembly about the General Security of Military Information Agreement on June 28?just a day before the pact was due to be signed. The public had been kept completely in the dark. No mention of the deal was made in government press conferences, even though Seoul and Tokyo came to a provisional agreement in April.

The preparation of a military pact, behind the back of the people, with a former colonial power provoked a public uproar. Japan annexed Korea after the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, and maintained a ruthless colonial occupation over the peninsula until its 1945 defeat in World War II.

This history remains a highly sensitive subject in Korea. Japan?s strengthening of its military in recent years, combined with its reassertion of territorial claims over the disputed Dokdo Islands, has prevented closer relations between the two US allies.

Lee?s administration claimed that the agreement focused on cooperation against North Korea, but this only heightened popular fears of preparations for a war against the North.

The furore generated by the ?secret? military agreement is likely to further undermine the prospects of the ruling New Frontier Party (NFP) in December?s presidential election. Lee?s presidency was already at a record low of support, above all due to the continuing fall in living standards for working people. The president?s brother, a former government lawmaker, has also been arrested for allegedly taking huge bribes from banks.

In an attempt to distance the party from Lee, senior NFP official Chin Young declared that it was inappropriate ?to rush the signing of the agreement, with its details remaining unknown to the public.?

The opposition Democratic Unity Party (DUP) labelled Lee a ?traitor? to the nation, and sought to inflame anti-Japanese sentiment in the lead-up to December?s election. DUP chairman Lee Hae-chan said the government ?did not submit a single report to the National Assembly, while entering into an agreement with a country that invaded us.?

Some DUP figures accused the Lee administration of bowing to pressure from the United States. Choo Mi-ae, a leading DUP member, declared: ?The US must have pushed Seoul to seal the deal during the two-plus-two talks held in Washington from June 13 to 14, as part of the trilateral security cooperation between US, South Korea and Japan.?

Amid mounting criticism, Lee postponed signing the deal with Japan, and Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik apologised for not publicly disclosing the negotiations with Tokyo. Lee removed his chief foreign policy aide Kim Tae-hyo, who played a key role in the talks with Japan. Since Lee took office in 2007, Kim had been regarded as the chief architect of Lee?s policy of taking a hard line against North Korea and strongly backing South Korea?s alliance with the US.

A US State Department spokesman sought to play down the reversal, telling the Yonhap news agency: ?Such agreements would be useful but we recognise that this is a bilateral issue for the ROK [Republic of Korea] and Japan.? Yet there is no doubt that Washington had strongly pushed for the adoption of the pact.

The conservative Chosun Ilbo last month cited an unnamed government source saying: ?Washington had proposed joint military drills for Korea, the US and Japan for years, and the information-sharing agreement is something the US had been asking for in the same context.? The source added that the moves had ?strategic significance? vis-?-vis China?s expanding military strength.

In other words, while the Lee government portrayed the intelligence-sharing deal as being primarily directed against North Korea, China was the real target. The Obama administration?s desire for a military agreement between two of its key Asian allies is part of its wider push to strategically encircle China by strengthening America?s network of alliances and bases throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Late last month, trilateral naval exercises were conducted in the Yellow Sea, off the southern coast of Korea, involving a US aircraft carrier battle group, three Japanese destroyers and South Korea warships. The two-day naval drills were the first in which South Korea and Japan had openly participated together. In the past, Japan?s participation had been limited to observer status or, as in 2001, kept secret.

The naval exercises sent an unmistakable message to Beijing. In response, Chinese naval admiral Yin Zhuo told the state CCTV network that the three nations had ?taken the first steps toward a ?mini-NATO? in Northeast Asia with their joint military exercises.?

Washington?s plan for a ?trilateral? alliance with Japan and South Korea also sought to counter increasing economic links between China, South Korea and Japan. In May, the three states announced they would begin negotiations on a trilateral free trade agreement. If completed, the free trade zone would become one of the world?s largest, rivalling the European Union and the North American bloc. Earlier in May, negotiations began on a bilateral free trade agreement between China and South Korea.

As well as whipping up chauvinist sentiment, the DUP?s claims that Lee ?sold out? the country by drafting the military pact with Japan reflected concerns among sections of the Korean corporate elite that the intelligence-sharing agreement would increase tensions with China?South Korea?s largest trading partner.

According to the pro-Democrat Hankyoreh newspaper, DUP floor leader Park Jie-won expressed concern that such an agreement would further push the countries in the region into opposing camps, with South Korea, Japan and the US in ?a southern bloc,? and China, North Korea and Russia forming ?a northern bloc.?

The abrupt postponement of Seoul?s intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan, and the divisions within South Korea?s ruling circles over the issue, underscore the sharp tensions being produced throughout the region by the Obama administration?s drive to undercut China?s rising influence in Asia.

PFT: Cutler changes his tune on Forte's contract

Mike SmithAP

With the Bucs rebuilding, the Panthers building, and the Saints potentially disintegrating, many think the Falcons could easily capture the NFC South title.

Falcons coach Mike Smith isn?t among the many.

During a conference call held in connection with the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe (which will be televised, by the way, by NBC), Smith said that the division is wide open.

?I know that the NFC South has been one the most competitive divisions for a number of years,? Smith said, via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.? ?Most certainly before I got to the Falcons, there was the worst-to-first story for three or four years.? It?s very competitive.?

Making it more competitive is the presence of a quartet of top-notch quarterbacks.

?In the division, we have three outstanding quarterbacks that have proven themselves and then there is the young one in Josh Freeman that is going to be a great quarterback as well,? Smith said.? ?It?s a fun division and I don?t think the offseason is any different.? We all will prepare and get ready to go play.?

Smith realizes that, whether the Falcons get to the postseason by winning the division or via the wild-card route, they won?t be taken seriously until they win a playoff game.

?I think ultimately we are both going to be judged on success in the postseason,? Smith said. ?There have been a lot of teams and a lot of players that have broken through and gotten that first win.? That?s why we are doing everything in our power to figure out how to get that done. . . .? We know that we?re doing it the right way.? We just have to figure out how to play better at the end of the season.?

At the end, middle, and start of the season, Smith has high hopes for second-year skill-position players Julio Jones and Jacquizz Rodgers.? ?They were at a big disadvantage in my opinion last year in terms of coming in on the 25th of July and not really having an opportunity to spend time with the coaching staff and understand the actual sequencing of what a work week should be like,? Smith said.? ?Julio had a very good year for us last year and so did Jacquizz.? I think they?ll be integral parts of the success we have this year.?

The Falcons likely will have success.? But it won?t really be success until they win a playoff game.? The last postseason win came eight years ago, when Mike Vick and company thrashed the Rams, 47-17.

Tools Like Java Mq Are Crucial For Many Companies Today

Selecting the best tools for a given situation a company deals with is crucial in today's world. For many companies, having Java MQ is a way to help communication flow more readily. There are a number of different ways to approach group communication platforms and other things that software can assist with, but today's software professionals know that some tools are better than others. With Msg Q, software engineers can construct their own group communication systems. These systems are at the heart of many different kinds of work done at numerous companies where employees need to work either with each other or others at a different firm. The strength of a tool like Java MQ does come from the trust that many engineers have in Java and its ability to give them freedom and flexibility to build more effectively. Java has put powerful resources into making sure that its tools are industry standard and allow for a great number of things to be done quickly and easily.

Msg Q is no different in this respect, but it is special in the sense that it plays such a pivotal role in how communications in many different settings gets done.

Without components like message queues, keeping things organized properly could be a problem. When studying computer science, most professionals will have learned about msgqueue and understand how to work with it. Message Oriented Middleware is big business today and many firms do provide some sort of solution to this kind of need. There are other firms that work with msgqueue solutions and provide them as part of their over all services. In addition to a variety of commercial packages, there are also those which are Open Source so budgets can be built around the particular solution that will work best for a given purpose. Those that want to understand the infrastructure of today's group communications software would do well to study these topics in greater detail. They are pivotal to many companies that have dozens, hundreds or even thousands of workers who need to stay connected.

As networks and network communication becomes ever more integral to our lives, this type of middleware is going to become even more essential so knowing about it now is never a waste of time. With the right level of knowledge, many different custom solutions can be built which will meet a variety of needs for different work environments. In the end, this is what software tools are about: improving work place efficiency. Tools of the MQ variety can vastly improve the flow of communication in a work place and make sure that everyone understands their role, the tasks they need to do and the order in which things should be done. This helps to boost profits by reducing the amount of time and effort wasted not just by employees, but by the managers that need to keep track of their progress. When used the right way, software solutions of this type are extremely beneficial.

Early Americans took two tool tracks

Oregon finds indicate ancient Clovis hunters weren?t alone

Web edition : 2:27 pm

Ancient residents of four caves in south-central Oregon may deserve bragging rights as the earliest known Americans. New finds in the caves unveil a population that reached the New World around the same time or shortly before the famed Clovis hunters who roamed the Great Plains and Southeast at the end of the Ice Age.

Regardless of who first set foot in North America after crossing a land bridge from Asia, populations practicing at least two spear-making styles colonized the New World, say archaeologist Dennis Jenkins of the University of Oregon in Eugene and his colleagues.

Excavations at Oregon?s Paisley Caves find that four distinctively shaped stone spearheads ? representing a toolmaking style called the Western Stemmed Tradition ? date to between 14,000 and 13,000 years ago, Jenkins and his colleagues report in the July 13 Science.

Weaponry from Clovis hunters, long-thought to be the first Americans, spread westward from the Southeast between about 13,500 and 13,000 years ago, whereas the Western Stemmed Tradition arose in the far western United States and moved eastward over several thousand years, the researchers suggest.

?We seem to have two different toolmaking traditions that coexisted in North America and did not blend for hundreds of years,? Jenkins says.

Some investigators have held that Clovis-style implements were precursors of Western Stemmed points. In support of that scenario, a Wyoming site previously yielded Clovis points in deposits below Western Stemmed points, a clear sign of Clovis seniority.

But Western Stemmed points at the Paisley Caves are at least as old as 13,000- to 12,800-year-old Clovis points that have been found elsewhere in Oregon, Jenkins says. Makers of Western Stemmed artifacts developed their own style in the Far West before traveling east to Wyoming and other areas already inhabited by Clovis hunters, he suggests.

Western Stemmed points previously recovered at two Nevada sites and one Idaho location probably also date to Clovis times, although better radiocarbon evidence is needed, Jenkins says.

At the Paisley Caves, Jenkins? team obtained 121 new radiocarbon dates, in addition to 69 previous radiocarbon dates, for sagebrush twigs, dried feces and animal bones unearthed above and below stone artifacts. An independent lab identified human DNA in dried feces from the Oregon caves that dated to at least 13,000 years ago.

The team found that human DNA from the Paisley Caves contained signatures known to be common among Siberians and many Native Americans, indicating an Asian homeland for early New World colonists.

Evolutionary geneticist Hendrik Poinar of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, suspected that DNA from later Native Americans might have seeped through soil and into ancient feces at the Paisley Caves. Several soil samples in the new study contained human DNA, raising the possibility that genetic material from later Paisley Caves visitors contaminated older, buried feces at the sites, Poinar says.

Still, radiocarbon measures obtained by Jenkins? team provide ?reliable ages that put Western Stemmed points contemporaneous with Clovis points,? comments anthropologist David Meltzer of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Early New World settlers practiced several different toolmaking traditions, including one at a roughly 14,000-year-old Chilean site, remarks archaeologist James Adovasio of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa.

?The emerging picture is of multiple movements from Asia into the Americas by populations with multiple tool traditions,? Adovasio says.

It?s too early to say whether Western Stemmed points were the product of one population of New World settlers and Clovis spear points the handiwork of another population, or if different groups of colonists contributed to each toolmaking style, Meltzer cautions.

Awkward! How a workplace hug can go awry

Getty Images stock

Yes, this hug is a bit awkward.

By Allison Linn

James Lee was having a friendly chat with the president of the university where he works when it happened to him: The awkward co-worker hug.

Lee, 44, and the university president were at a fundraising event, and Lee realized that there were other people waiting to talk to them. Forgetting for a moment that this was a professional and not a personal context, Lee went in for the hug instead of the handshake.

He can still recall in vivid detail what happened next.

?It was a long moment for me because halfway in, I realized what was about to happen. At that point, however, my body had already hit his outstretched arm that was expecting a handshake, and I knew that I couldn't call it off. I completed the awkward, inappropriate embrace,? he wrote in an e-mail.

Mortified, Lee found the nearest exit and made his escape.

In today?s casual office environment, where people wear shorts and flip-flops to work and are encouraged to bond with the boss at happy hour or other after-hours events, it can be hard to know whether to hug or not to hug.

?You usually don?t see in the code of conduct, ?No hugging,?? said Pamela Eyring, president of The Protocol School of Washington, which offers business etiquette training. ?So it makes the lines very blurred.?

Most office etiquette experts say that generally, an arms-off policy is best. And yet, most admit that they too have been in a situation where they?ve either given, or received, an awkward co-worker hug.

Lee,?a sociology professor at San Jose State University, said the 2011 episode with his university?s president still embarrasses him. He thinks it?s partly because he?s openly gay, and he worried that the hug would be misinterpreted by others at the event.

After the incident, Lee only saw the university president once more before he retired.

?He came over and he stuck his hand out,? Lee said. ?We shook hands, we talked.?

Etiquette and protocol trainer Rachel Wagner knows how Lee feels. She, too, recalls a social event where she was talking to a colleague and, in a sudden burst of joviality, hugged the woman.

?It just happened, like, ?Oh my gosh, I?m hugging,'? she said.

Almost immediately, Wagner realized she shouldn?t have hugged that person. But she never said anything, and the incident blew over.

The social trick of just pretending something didn?t happen often works best in such situations.?If you do feel the need to address it, do so quickly and with humor, experts advise.

?A self-deprecating confession can make a world of difference,? said Jim Webber, who provides workplace training on preventing harassment and?runs an advice blog called Evil Skippy at Work.

Webber says there are times when a hug at work is appropriate, such as when someone has just received terrible personal news or gotten word?they have been laid off.

But even then there are ground rules.

For one, he says, you should think of the office hug like fishing: ?Hug and release.?

?You should not be able to have a conversation at work while I hug you,? he said.

Also, your fingers should not move during the hug.

A hug can quickly turn inappropriate if it feels like the person is using it to gain power or bully other employees. Webber recalled one situation where a male employee was hugging female employees for just a little too long and with a smirk in his eyes. Asked about it, Webber said the man said that if the ?little ladies? didn?t like it, all they had to do was tell him.

In another incident, he said, a female employee told male co-workers, ?I?m just a cougar, give me a hug!? When one objected, Webber said she told him to ?take it like a man.?

Even?well-meaning hugs can make some people feel uncomfortable.

?Most of us don?t want that intimacy with our co-workers. We have to be with them 40 hours a week. We don?t want to hug them, too,? Webber?said.

(Webber himself is not a hugger, although he?s had the equally mortifying experience of accidentally saying, ?Bye-bye, sweetie? or ?I love you? to a client when ending a phone conversation.)

An errant hug is generally not going to be enough to prompt a harassment complaint. Carol Miaskoff, assistant legal counsel for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said the line would be crossed if there was a clear and pervasive pattern of unwanted physical attention.

Still, it can be complicated, especially in workplaces where there?s a culture of hugging and affection. Her advice: If you don?t like hugging, make sure you are clear about it.

?A clear dividing line is if someone says, ?Don?t hug me,?? she said.

Part of the issue is that American workplaces tend to be more casual than in most countries, and the lines between work and personal life are often blurred by everything from office romances to friending on Facebook.

?We?re a very casual nation, but there are still work environments that are very formal,? said Eyring, of the Protocol School of Washington.

Eyring said whether or not to hug also depends on where you are.

For example, she said a colleague visiting from another location might give her a hug if they meet at the office. But if they saw each other at a class she was leading, a handshake would send a more appropriate message.

?He?s showing respect,? she said.

A public hug, especially between a male and female co-worker, also can give the wrong impression that there?s more to the acquaintance than there really is.

Patti Johnson, a career coach and founder of the consultancy PeopleResults, advises people to use hugs sparingly and only when you?re sure the person will be amenable to it.

A big clue that you shouldn?t hug the person: The outstretched arm indicating that the person is clearly expecting a handshake.

In some cases, a hug can hurt more than it helps. Johnson recalled a time when she was part of a group selecting a vendor for a company. One of the candidates, whom she knew casually, greeted her with a big, and unexpected, hug.

?It was like he was trying to make it appear to the group that we were really good buddies,? she said.

That wasn?t the main reason he didn?t get the account, but it didn?t help.

On the other hand, Johnson said that when her mother-in-law passed away recently, she appreciated her co-workers? kindness.

?I had a lot of hugs in the workplace and that was nice,? she said. ?It wasn?t inappropriate.?

Donna Farrugia, executive director of the Creative Group, a staffing agency for marketing and advertising professionals, thinks people have become more conservative with such displays in recent years, as harassment awareness has become more widespread.

Still, she it would be sad if hugging were to become altogether taboo.

?I have clients that I?ve done business with for a long time, and you can kind of feel it as you walk toward each other (that) there?s going to be a little hug happening here, and it?s a good thing,? she said.

Anyone looking for a lost or missing cat may be in luck.

According to the Humane Society of Scott County, animal control officers seized 28 cats and kittens from a Bettendorf home on Tuesday, July 10, 2012. A turtle and hamster were also taken into custody.

A spokesperson for the Scott County Humane Society said they think the man living in the home had taken in the animals as strays he found in the Iowa and Illinois Quad Cities.?

Only one of the animals seized had an identifying microchip to help find the previous owner.

If you have been looking for a lost friend, please visit the Scott County Humane Society at 2808 West Central Park in Davenport for a possible happy reunion.

For starters, the average American household has approximately three television sets. The average television set lasts around six years, and the average television set costs $400. That means television costs about $200 a year for the average American home just for the hardware, on average.

The average American household includes approximately four people, and the average American watches 2.8 hours of television per day. Thus, in the average house, the televisions are in use for 11.2 hours per day.

The average American television consumes about 120 watts while in use. Thus, the average household uses 1.3 kWh per day of electricity to power their televisions, or 475 kWh per year.

Also, somewhere between 75% and 90% of American homes have some sort of cable or satellite package. Assuming you have one HD cable box with a DVR and two normal cable boxes, you?re using somewhere around 550 kWh per year just to power the cable boxes.

Assuming an average cost of $0.15 per kWh for energy, the average American household is dropping $150 a year to power their televisions and cable/satellite equipment.

On top of that, the average monthly cable bill was $71 in 2009. While I was unable to find a more current exact number, I did find data that says cable bills rise an average of 5% per year, meaning that a family?s monthly cable or satellite bill this year would be $82. This would add up to $984 per year for the average American household.

Adding all of this up, the average American family is spending $1,334 per year to keep the televisions on and loaded with programming. That?s an expense, any way you slice it.

(Remember, this is the average family. Many families will have fewer televisions or a less expensive package, just as many families will have more televisions and a more expensive package.)

What are you getting for that $1,334 per year? Three hours of each day for the average American is spent watching television. Much of that time is spent selling you products. Even if you ignore the commercials (and they?re designed to not be ignored, even if people think they?re ignoring them), product placement within the programs is incredibly prevalent, with tens of thousands of instances of product placement found just within a few months of just primetime network programming. The shows themselves sell you things, even when they seem to have nothing to do with sales.

If the average American family tossed out their televisions, they would have three more hours per day for other activities per person, save $1,334 per year in energy and programming costs, and significantly reduce their exposure to marketing tactics, which would reduce their desire to buy products.

Even cutting back on television would help in those areas. Limiting television to one hour per day would free up two more hours for the average American, trim their energy bill back a bit, and reduce their exposure to marketing. Cutting one?s cable package would also significantly reduce spending, as can choosing not to replace the third set in your home.

Television seems inexpensive on the surface because the cost of it is stripped away from the everyday use. Most of the time, you go hit a button, the television is on, and it seems as if it comes into our homes for free. However, there is a lot of cost associated with television use, and you can greatly cut back on that cost with just a few simple choices.

Senate Democrats pushing tax cuts for business

(AP) ? Democrats want to push tax cuts through the Senate for companies that hire new workers, give raises or buy major new equipment this year.

With neither party eager to let the other claim campaign-season victories, the ultimate fate of the roughly $29 billion legislation seems dubious. Debate was to begin Tuesday, though it was possible Republicans would use procedural blockades to quickly derail the measure.

The legislation would grant tax credits ? which are subtracted from a company's tax bill ? equal to 10 percent of the amount its 2012 payroll exceeds the salaries it paid in 2011. The maximum credit would be $500,000, a figure that would disproportionately help smaller businesses.

It would also let companies that buy major new property in 2012, such as machinery, deduct the entire cost of the purchase this year. Currently they can only deduct half the amount.

In an election year in which the slumping economy gives President Barack Obama and the Senate's majority Democrats little to boast about, the proposal lets Democrats take the offensive on the tax issue while asserting they are trying to encourage job creation. It was reaching the floor days after the latest gloomy Labor Department report that a scant 80,000 jobs were created last month, leaving the unemployment rate at a rugged 8.2 percent.

"This tax cut is by no means a cure-all, but it could be a difference-maker for small firms on the fence about adding payroll," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. "After last month's sluggish jobs numbers, we may be on the verge of a rare moment of agreement on how to help the economy."

On Monday, Obama proposed continuing wide-ranging tax cuts ? which will otherwise lapse in January ? for most taxpayers, while letting them expire for households making more than $250,000 annually. He argued that the rich should contribute to deficit reduction efforts.

Republicans want all the tax cuts to be renewed and have opposed Democratic efforts to omit the highest earners, saying that would hurt businesses.

"If my friends on the other side of the aisle truly care about small businesses, as I know they do, then they should join us in stopping these tax hikes that will hit those very same people if the president has his way," Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said of Obama's proposal and the Senate Democratic bill. "If small businesses need help then the best thing we can do is stop all the tax increases."

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, plans for a House vote on renewing all those tax cuts later this month. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is likely to hold a Senate vote in July on Obama's proposal to renew the expiring tax reductions for all but those earning more than $250,000.

It was unclear whether Republicans would demand opportunities to reshape the business tax cuts or to force votes on other topics as the price for letting debate begin on the Democratic bill.

The legislation contrasts with a $46 billion measure Republicans pushed through the GOP-run House in April granting 20 percent tax deductions to all businesses with fewer than 500 employees ? more than 99 percent of the nation's companies. It drew a veto threat from Obama and has gone nowhere in the Senate.

Both measures were unpaid for, meaning that if enacted, their price tags would make federal deficits bigger.

Both parties support the tax breaks for equipment purchase, though critics have questioned their job-creation potential because they say they would cut taxes for companies that would have bought items anyway.
