5 Things You Need to Know Before Syndicating Press Releases ...

October 23, 2012

For the longest time, article marketing and online press release distribution have been staples in just about every SEO campaign. These methods were very effective for increasing your search engine presence, getting you more links, driving traffic to your website, and increasing your name recognition and authority. But over the past year or so, Google has made some major changes to its algorithm that have put these time-tested tactics in jeopardy.

This leaves many people wondering: Is syndicating press releases online through various directories still an effective tactic? The answer: It can be, but you can?t take the same approach you?ve probably been taking. Here are 5 important things you need to know before syndicating press releases online.

  1. It?s all about quality writing ? Google?s algorithm updates are typically about one thing: improving the quality of their search results. They?re trying to weed out the low-quality content and spammy sites from their search results. That means that what they want to see is quality content that is truly useful to the reader. In fact, many article directories and press release directories have increased their quality standards in an effort to earn back the trust of Google. This means that your writing needs to really be on point. No more cranking out tons of press releases without much attention to their quality. Less is more these days.
  2. Choose your press release directories carefully ? Speaking of less is more, that goes for syndicating your press releases across directories as well. Rather than blasting your press release out to hundreds of press release directories, publish it on just 3-4 top quality, trusted directories instead. You don?t want to be associated with spammy directories, so choose carefully.
  3. ?Spinning? content is a major no-no ? Back in the day, it was a fairly common practice to ?spin? articles and press releases ? that is, to rewrite them slightly to make each of them unique. This practice will get you penalized for duplicate and spammy content now, and it can make you take a major hit in the search engine rankings.
  4. Don?t expect a lot of link juice ? The truth is that a lot of the press release directories just don?t pass much link juice these days. In other words, you?re not going to see a huge spike in your search rankings from these links that you?re getting whenever your press releases are published. Now, that doesn?t mean the links are useless. They can still be effective for driving traffic.
  5. Send your press releases directly to reporters ? Don?t rely solely on publishing your press releases online. Make sure you distribute them directly to reporters. This will give you the best chance of getting your story out there in a way that reaches more people and helps you from an online marketing standpoint as well.

What are your thoughts on using press release directories in this new age of Google?

The Ford logo is seen through a sculpture of a globe outside of the Ford plant in Genk, Belgium on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012. The fate of the under-utilized Ford plant in Belgium could become known as early as Wednesday following an emergency meeting between the automaker and unions. The severe sales slump, sales in Europe are the lowest since the early 1990's, has led to many factories operating far below their capacity, resulting in high incentive costs and huge losses affecting all automakers. BRUSSELS (AP) ? Ford Motor Co. will close a car plant in eastern Belgium ? one of its main European factories ? by the end of 2014, a move that will result in 4,500 direct job losses and 5,000 more among subcontractors.

Exactly half a century after construction on the Genk plant started, Ford told a management council there that production was winding down since slumping European sales has forced a restructuring of its plants.

"This is taking us by surprise and is an extremely bitter pill," Christian Democrat union representative Johan Lamers told The Associated Press.

Ford has been under pressure in Europe due to the region's dwindling demand for its models and the overall slide of car sales on the continent due to the debt crisis.

The company expects to lose more than $1 billion this year in Europe, where it gets a quarter of its sales. Analysts say Ford has more factory capacity than it needs.

The regional authorities in northern Belgium's Flanders are already looking how to recover money from the ?57 million it committed in 2010 to keep Ford rooted there for years to come.

"It is incomprehensible and a nightmare for those people," said Flanders minister president Kris Peeters.

"In October 2010, we negotiated and signed a deal worth many millions. And now they said 'OK, let's close Genk'," Peeters said.

The plant in Genk makes the midsize Mondeo, the S-MAX minivan and the Galaxy car. Ford said it plans to move the production of all three lines to Valencia, Spain.

"The proposed restructuring of our European manufacturing operations is a fundamental part of our plan to strengthen Ford's business in Europe," CEO Ford of Europe Stephen Odell said in a statement.

Ford has been struggling in Europe.

Figures from Acea, the European carmakers' association, show European mark sales have dropped 10.8 percent on a year-by-year basis in September. Ford's drop in sales was even bigger at 14.9 percent.

Ford's European management was expected to meet with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and regional Flemish authorities later Wednesday.

The announcement came barely a month after Ford had given reassurances about production at the Genk plant, Lamers said.

Ford Genk represents more than 30 percent of the car production in Belgium.

Workers took the announcement early Wednesday with lots of tears but relative calm. A bonfire was set up at the gate of the plant but there was little union action since the factory was in the middle of a three-week layoff because of slack demand.

Car workers looked into an uncertain future.

"Well, where are we going to find a job? It is very difficult in this time, in this crisis," said Ford employee Gustav Janssen.

Kennedy relative denied parole for '75 murder of neighbor

SUFFIELD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Kennedy relative Michael Skakel on Wednesday was denied parole in his first attempt to persuade authorities he has served enough of his 20 years-to-life prison sentence for the 1975 murder of his 15-year-old neighbor.

Skakel, 52, closed his eyes as the decision was announced at a hearing at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution, then looked back at a dozen supporters in the room.

About a half dozen friends and family members of the victim, Martha Moxley, remained silent as the decision was announced.

The next time Skakel will be eligible for parole is October 2017, the parole board said.

Earlier this year, the nephew of Ethel Kennedy, who has spent 10 years in prison so far, unsuccessfully asked a three-judge panel in Connecticut Superior Court to reduce his sentence, saying he should have been sentenced as a juvenile and not an adult.

Skakel was 15 years old at the time of the murder of Moxley, a neighbor in Greenwich, Connecticut, who was beaten to death with a golf club. Her body was found on the lawn of her parents' home in the affluent New York City suburb.

Skakel has maintained his innocence since his arrest in 2000. Long considered a cold case, the Moxley investigation was reopened in 1991 in the wake of an unrelated rape trial of Skakel relative William Kennedy Smith, who was acquitted.

In 2006, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal by Skakel seeking to overturn his conviction on grounds that his constitutional rights had been violated because Connecticut's five-year statute of limitations, in place at the time Moxley died, had expired when he was charged.

In 2009, lawyers for Skakel unsuccessfully sought a new trial to overturn the conviction, saying new evidence implicated other men.

"This person committed a heinous crime that gave many people a sentence of suffering that was irreversible," read one letter among those submitted in opposition to Skakel's parole. "Why then should this person be given relief, when none is available for those who suffered the loss of a daughter, a sister, a dear friend."

A letter written by a relative in support of Skakel read, "For those who know Michael to be innocent, Michael's incarceration greatly compounds the tragedy of Martha Moxley's death."

The Board of Pardons and Paroles made public the letters but redacted the names of the authors.

I Am Adopted: My Forever Family

Father's Hand

?

Father of the fatherless and protector of widows

is God in his holy habitation.

God settles the solitary in a home;

Psalm 68:5-6a

?

More than ever before, in this society of broken marriages and single mothers, we are a nation of the fatherless.

In 2009 Unicef estimated that there are over two million orphans in the United States alone. Over two million orphans.

They are waiting. In foster homes, in orphanages. Waiting.

Waiting for fathers.

?A lot of times kids in adoptive situations know their mom, and have a connection, but sometimes dads are more elusive? God being a Father to the Fatherless means so much in filling the gaps of the father they never had. Being the strong rock in their life, the foundation to build on, and (a) male figure they can rely on as they seek relationship with Him.? ? Brittany, adoptive mother

Yet even those with fathers physically present in their lives may have wounds. Our earthly fathers are sinners too.

As adopted children of God, we know that He is our perfect Father, with only our best interests at heart, disciplining us when needed, but ever forgiving, always loving.

?

Orphans have a need for forever families which was put there by God Himself. It?s a need that we all have. To belong and be loved; to be part of a family.

God knows that we don?t do well alone (Genesis 2:18, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

You and I, adopted into the family of God, have found our forever family. We are Jesus? brothers and sisters (Matt 12:50). We are now in a household of faith (Galatians 6:10).

When we choose Christ, God sets us in a new family, of which He is the perfect head.

?

?just as the Good Shepherd longs to see the return of just one who is lost, He desires to see the solitary and lonely in their own ?flock? with those who will love and care for them. ? Christina, adoptee and adoptive mother

I have seen the passion of adoptive parents. The desire they have to bring the children they know God has prepared for them into their forever families becomes a mission.

That passion is but a small reflection of the passion the Lord has for orphans.

You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. Exodus 22:22

He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. Deuteronomy 10:18

Learn to do good; seek justice, reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:17

Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of the least of these, you did it unto Me. Matthew 25: 45

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. James 1:27

As people made in His image, we are to imitate our Heavenly Father. This passionate adoptive mom says it well:

?This passage doesn?t simply give an example of God?s ?character? if you will, but it is God leading by example?doing first what He expects His people, His church to do.? It gives us a concise ?road-map? to follow as to how we are to care for widows and orphans. We are not to just sit in the pews and talk about caring for them.? We have to go into the places where they are, which are Holy to God.? We have to actively seek them out, just as He does.? We have to meet them at the point of their need and lead them to God, who can meet each and every need they have. In doing so, they are part of a family of believers and are no longer alone.? ? Christina, adoptee and adoptive mom

As adopted children of God, we are no longer fatherless! He is the head of our forever family of brothers and sisters in Christ. And like Him, we must go into the world, serving the hurt and lonely, bringing them into our earthly and heavenly families to share in our eternal inheritance in Christ.

They are waiting.

Robin Scott-Elliot: Forget war on doping, UCI president Pat McQuaid is happier fighting critics

There was one moment during his hour-long appearance in front of the media yesterday when Pat McQuaid, president of his sport's governing body and once a promising cyclist himself, outlined his reasoning for never having become a pro rider some four decades earlier. It was because, he said, he knew it meant he would have to make a decision whether to dope or not.

Paul Kimmage, the former pro rider turned journalist, tells a story of the moment when he was offered the chance to dope as he lay exhausted on a treatment table during his first Tour de France. He said no, and has since become a persistent campaigner to expose the practice. McQuaid said yesterday the fight against doping was one of the main reasons he sought the UCI presidency seven years ago.

McQuaid and the UCI are currently suing Kimmage. McQuaid insists it has nothing to do with Lance Armstrong or doping, it's simply about defamation. Kimmage claimed the UCI covered up a positive test recorded by Armstrong. No we didn't, say the UCI. They do admit receiving a large donation from Armstrong but insist it is unconnected. They spent $25,000 of the donation on dope tests for junior riders.

The governing body recently won a defamation case against Floyd Landis, a former Tour winner, doper and one of those who gave evidence against Armstrong. He made a similar claim. Landis is not allowed, according to the ruling, to say the UCI are "corrupt, terrorists, fools, full of s***, clowns, liars, no different to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi."

Nobody sent in the clowns in Aigle, the UCI's Swiss HQ, yesterday but if a man with large feet and a big red nose had taken a seat at the top table he might have gone unnoticed.

The UCI just doesn't seem to get it. "We don't have money like Fifa" was one line of defence laid down by McQuaid for their struggle to combat doping. That means McQuaid and the UCI can see no conflict of interest in accepting donations from riders or teams to aid the fight against doping ? a fight McQuaid, incidentally, does not believe can be won.

?

Nevertheless there is no reason for anyone to resign over all this, McQuaid insisted, pointing out that it didn't happen on his watch ? it happened when Hein Verbruggen was in charge, but the honorary president should not resign either.

"It's been a pretty horrific seven years," he said of the incidents of doping he has had to deal with during his tenure. But, hey, what can you do? Except sue.

FX Rogue Review | Rings

On a daily basis, hundreds of thousands of trades are created inside a currency exchange marketplace known as Currency trading. The phrase ?Forex? right stems forex markets from the start of two phrases ? ?foreign? and ?exchange?. Compared with other investing techniques including the stock market place, Foreign exchange won?t include the investing of any products, bodily or representative. Alternatively, Fx operates by way of getting, marketing, and investing concerning the currencies of assorted economies from throughout the world. For the reason that Foreign exchange promote is really a intercontinental buying and selling process, trades are created twenty-four hours a day, 5 times per week. On top of that, Foreign exchange is simply not bound by any a single manage company, which suggests that Foreign exchange will be the only correct free of charge current market financial buying and selling technique out there at this time. By leaving the exchange charges away from any one particular group?s palms, it truly is a great deal additional challenging to even try and manipulate or corner the currency promote. With each of the positive aspects connected with all the Foreign exchange procedure, as well as intercontinental variety of participation, the Forex trading current market may be the biggest current market during the full earth.

Wherever among one trillion and one.five trillion equivalent America bucks are traded within the Forex trading market place each and every and every single day.

So alternatively than guidebook you via a structured website with far more specifics by numerous sections; they frequently make use of this pitch webpage plus they commonly pack it with information and facts and also a ton of difficult promoting. It has established to become the craze and it really is gotten more challenging and tougher for a few EAs to market place their computer software devoid of these kind of pitch pages. It is actually generally the situation with electronic items and or/stuff you are able to purchase on line. With regards to these make-money-online and Fx web sites they normally use a lots of flash to them and naturally several factors to draw shoppers in. Actually it is not substantially various from almost every other sort of promoting, most unquestionably not the likes of other financial systems, and so forth. They have to have some kind of attractiveness and be aggressive. My summary is the fact that even though it seems to be like it may be a fraud, do your research anyways and it might not be. It just is dependent. Some factors are indicators, but in my view online layout and tough providing are certainly not immediate symptoms of the rip-off.

While while in the Fx Promote a little something to hope for can be charts and evidence.

Most fx choices buying and selling is carried out through phone as you?ll find only some foreign exchange brokers presenting on-line foreign exchange solution investing platforms.

Fx Selection Defined ? A forex trading alternative is usually a money currency agreement supplying the forex trading choice customer the appropriate, although not the obligation, to get or provide a particular forex trading spot agreement (the fundamental) in a distinct selling price (the strike rate) on or just before a certain date (the expiration date). The sum the currency trading solution customer pays towards the foreign exchange possibility seller to the forex trading choice agreement legal rights is termed the currency trading possibility ?premium.?

The Forex trading Selection Customer ? The purchaser, or holder, of the foreign currency alternative has the decision to possibly provide the foreign currency possibility agreement previous to expiration, or she or he can decide to maintain the foreign currency choices agreement till expiration and exercising his / her suitable to get a place within the fundamental spot foreign currency. The act of working out the foreign currency solution and getting the subsequent fundamental placement from the foreign currency spot promote is called ?assignment? or remaining ?assigned? a spot place.

As I mentioned higher than, the foreign exchange investing is regarded as on the list of most prosperous and appealing chances for financial commitment as any human being can very easily do in your house or company and from any element of the earth.

For succeeding the Currency trading, an individual is simply not necessary to perform any on line marketing, advertising and marketing and so forth. The only real prerequisite while in the Fx trading is definitely the account that an individual is needed to open up with trustworthy and registered brokers, a pc program and quickly web link.

Now, you may have to generally be watchful when opening a Forex trading account with any broker due to the fact some could possibly be Rip-off. The Commodity Futures Investing Commission (CFTC) in US has jurisdiction more than all Futures and Forex trading exercise. When buying and selling during the foreign exchange markets, consumers really should only trade by using a CFTC registered entity that?s also a member of your Nationwide Futures Association (NFA) and is particularly controlled by CFTC. For non-US broker/ financial institution entities, make certain the broker or lender is registered with that country?s acceptable regulatory bodies.

The solitary most clear response is needless to say ? over the internet! On-line currency trading provides you immediate entry to your currency trading industry and there is a lot and a great deal of organizations on the market who?re in organization only to offer with you on the net. Be vigilant, do invest some time for getting some great foreign currency trading training, yet again this may be presented on the web and build your dummy account to trade prior to you try to go are living. For those who just take treatment and get your time, there is certainly no cause why you should not become successful in currency trading so, have endurance and adhere at it!

Las Vegas, NV, (October 22, 2012) Statin use is associated with protection from esophagus cancer according to a new meta-analysis of existing clinical studies exploring the cancer prevention effects of statins presented by a Mayo Clinic researcher, Dr. Siddharth Singh, at the American College of Gastroenterology 77th Annual Scientific Meeting in Las Vegas, NV.

Dr. Singh and his Mayo colleagues conducted a systematic review of eleven studies reporting 8,613 cases of esophageal cancer from studies including almost 1 million patients. Incidence of esophageal cancer is increasing in the United States, especially esophageal adenocarcinoma in patients with Barrett's esophagus.

"The meta-analysis of these studies showed a significant 30 percent reduction in esophageal cancer incidence with statins use," said Dr. Singh.

When looking more closely at the seven highest-quality observational studies among the eleven, researchers continued to find a significant chemo-protective effect with statin use. An analysis of a subset of patients with Barrett's esophagus, a pre-malignant condition associated with chronic acid reflux, revealed that, in this higher risk population, statin use was associated with a significant 41 percent decrease in the risk of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.

Bone-Building Drugs for Osteoporosis Do Not Add to Risk of Esophagus Cancer

In a separate study, researchers at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville found no association between oral use of bisphosphonates, a class of bone-building drugs widely used for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, and the risk of esophageal cancer. This meta-analysis of 42 studies included 3,570 esophageal cancer patients in the analysis by Dr. Saowanee Ngamruengphong and collegauges.

Does Waiting For Sex Strengthen a Relationship? | Madame Noire ...

Shutterstock

Sex is good. And for many of us, sex is great. It can make your eyes roll, toes curl, head snap back and legs tremble with so much intensity you think there?s an earthquake happening. But in a blossoming relationship, sex can be risky. If not with the right person, having sex too early will most likely leave you glued to your sofa with puffy eyes and a box of Kleenex?in other words, dude will up and jet as soon as he gets what he wants, burdening you with an achy heart and have you feeling like a complete fool, well unless that?s all you were looking for as well. Or you might discover that the man you thought was the good, clean-cut man-of-God is a low-down dirty dog who never deserved getting your goods in the first place. Here come the shoulda, coulda, wouldas?

It happens all the time. You wind up in a guy?s bed after going out on the first date or just a few dates, and while you might not get dumped, you spend months falling into his glory only to find that he?s not very honest, not very nice, not very single, or a VERY big man w***e with kids spread all around the globe. Angry and bruised, all you think is, ?I wish that I?d kept my legs closed.? We?ve all heard, read, and shared these stories time and time again.

It may be hard to do, but waiting for sex allows you time to forge a deeper connection with your mate. The more you talk?the more you get to know him and learn about his childhood friends, treasured secrets and favorite past times?the deeper your bond will be, which not only makes it easier for him to respect you (and vice versa), but increases your chances of powerful, passionate sex. You see, when you jump right to the covers, sex tends to end up being the basis of the relationship, and if it?s not good, you?ll probably call it quits. With no real feelings involved, you won?t be open to teaching your man how to love you the way you want to be loved, even if he is fully equipped in every other department. No enthusiasm, no passion.

But if you stay strong and keep your panties on tight, you learn to get comfortable with a person, and when the time comes to pour up the wine and throw on the Trey Songz (or much better, Teddy Pendergrass), you won?t be concerned about the small stuff?things you can work around. You won?t worry as much about the things that would?ve driven you mad had you not known your man as well as you do. Your level of respect for one another will supersede all of your flaws?and his?and neither of you will mind looking past everything that matters in relationships based on superficial standards.

If you?re serious about a guy, make sure you make him wait a little while before he gets a chance to get you in the sack. Sex is a powerful thing, and if you decide to knock the boots before you feel him out and know what he?s all about, you could be ruining a chance at something good.

General information on Ylcea

Languages: Id-Heren and Spelheim have distinct languages. Most Id-Herans speak Citian, however. Socharev usually speak both languages. Algam has its own tongue, but mysteriously, it shares a large part of its grammar with Citian. Citians pick up the Algam language fairly easily, and the reverse is also true.

Mingling: some mingling and migration does occur between the two human countries. You will see some Citian red hair in Id-Heren, and some Id-Heran blond in the City. Socharev can be just about anywhere, but it is unlikely for them to hold positions of power. These people are a target for discrimination, but with the recent emergence of humanity's common enemy in the beasts, this has decreased somewhat.

Money: Coins are primarily used in the two human capitals, though the larger Towns in Spelheim may also use them. Id-Heren has its own currency, but Citian coins are accepted everywhere. The two countries' coinage is roughly equivalent in weight - in daily life, a copper piece from one country is worth the same as the other. Some may insist on Citian coinage though, as it is the more powerful.
Coppers, bronze and brass make up the lowest currency, and are used for daily necessities. A silver piece would already be more than a commoner's weekly pay, and gold is reserved for the nobility.
The rest of the humans simply trade goods and favors. Algam, too, functions under a system of favors and cooperation.

More to be added here, undoubtedly.

Can We Change Realtors After Writing A House Contract ...

questions

Q: I want to change my Realtor. I have no contracts between me and my Realtor. I signed a house contract with Lennar using this Realtor?s name (and he is getting some percentage from Lennar) but now I want to change this Realtor as I found he is not the guy who can help me in my house closing. So, can I change him now?
?Swapna, Ashburn, VA

A: It is always a hard situation when you feel your Realtor is not working with you. Have you communicated to your Realtor and their broker you are unhappy with their service? You need to express to your Realtor and their broker the concerns and problems you are having. I am assuming you signed a real estate purchase contract to have your present Realtor represent you in the transaction, from writing the contract all the way through closing the home? this is your Realtor and broker obligation and duty to you. Should you decide to cancel the real estate purchase contract on the home you are buying, this will release your existing Realtor from their obligation. Otherwise, contact your Realtor and let the broker know you are having problems, they both represent you.

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI added seven more saints onto the roster of Catholic role models on Sunday, saying their example would strengthen the church it tries to rekindle the faith in places where it's lagging. Two of them were Americans: Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American saint from the U.S. and Mother Marianne Cope, a 19th century Franciscan nun who cared for leprosy patients in Hawaii.

Native Americans in beaded and feathered headdresses and leather-fringed tunics sang songs to Kateri as the sun rose over St. Peter's Square ahead of the Mass. Also taking part was Sharon Smith, whose cure from complications from pancreatitis was deemed a "miracle" by the Vatican, paving the way for Mother Marianne to be canonized.

In his homily, Benedict praised each of the seven new saints as examples for the entire church, calling Cope a "shining" example for Catholics and Kateri an inspiration to indigenous faithful across North America.

"With heroic courage they spent their lives in total consecration to the Lord and in the generous service of their brethren," he said.

Pilgrims from around the world attended the Mass, which started with the head of the Vatican's saint-making office reading aloud each of the names of the seven new saints in Latin, drawing cheers from the crowd.

"It's so nice to see God showing all the flavors of the world," marveled Gene Caldwell, a Native American member of the Menominee reservation in Neopit, Wisconsin who attended with his wife, Linda. "The Native Americans are enthralled" to have Kateri canonized, he said.

Cheers rose up again when Benedict, speaking in Latin, declared each of the seven saints and worthy of veneration by the entire church.

"It's amazing!" said Sheila Austin, a nurse who traveled with pilgrims from Syracuse, New York, for Mother Marianne's canonization. "There have been people working for many years so that today would come about."

The canonization coincided with a Vatican meeting of the world's bishops on trying to revive Christianity in places where it's fallen by the wayside. Several of the new saints were missionaries, making clear the pope hopes their example will be relevant today as the Catholic Church tries to hold onto its faithful in the face of competition from evangelical churches in Africa and Latin America, increasing secularization in the West and disenchantment with the church over the clerical sex abuse scandal in Europe and beyond.

One of the new saints was Pedro Calungsod, a Filipino teenager who helped Jesuit priests convert natives in Guam in the 17th century but was killed by spear-wielding villagers opposed to the missionaries' efforts to baptize their children.

Rome's sizeable Filipino expat community came out in droves for the Mass, including Marianna Dieza, a 39-year-old housekeeper who said it was a day of pride for all Filipinos. "We are especially proud because he is so young," she said.

The two American saints actually hail from roughly the same place ? what is today upstate New York ? although they lived two centuries apart.

Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," Kateri was born in 1656 to a pagan Iroquois father and an Algonquin Christian mother. Her parents and only brother died when she was 4 during a smallpox epidemic that left her badly scarred and with impaired eyesight. She went to live with her uncle, a Mohawk, and was baptized Catholic by Jesuit missionaries. But she was ostracized and persecuted by other natives for her faith, and she died in what is now Canada when she was 24.

Speaking in English and French, in honor of Kateri's Canadian ties, Benedict noted how unusual it was in Kateri's culture for her to choose to devote herself to her Catholic faith.

"May her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are," Benedict said. "Saint Kateri, protectress of Canada and the first Native American saint, we entrust you to the renewal of the faith in the first nations and in all of North America!"

Cope is revered among many Catholics in Hawaii, where she arrived from New York in 1883 to care for leprosy patients on Kalaupapa, an isolated peninsula on Molokai Island where Hawaii governments forcibly exiled them for decades. At the time, there was widespread fear of the disfiguring disease, which can cause skin lesions, mangled fingers and toes and lead to blindness.

Cope, however, led a band of Franciscan nuns to the peninsula to care for the patients, just as Saint Damien, a Belgian priest, did in 1873. He died of the disease 16 years later and was canonized in 2009.

"At a time when little could be done for those suffering from this terrible disease, Marianne Cope showed the highest love, courage and enthusiasm," Benedict said in his homily. "She is a shining and energetic example of the best of the tradition of Catholic nursing sisters and of the spirit of her beloved St. Francis."

Two-hundred fifty pilgrims from Hawaii traveled to Rome for Mother Marianne's canonization, including nine Kalaupapa patients.

Another pilgrim was Smith, of Syracuse, New York, whose 2005 cure from complications from pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, was declared medically inexplicable by the Vatican ? the "miracle" needed for Mother Marianne to be named a saint. In an interview last week, Smith recounted how she had fainted one day in her home, an allergic reaction to medication she was taking for a kidney transplant, and awoke in the hospital to find that doctors weren't giving her much time to live.

Her disease was eating away at her insides, causing her stomach to detach from her intestines. Doctors said they couldn't repair it. At a certain point, a nun pinned a bag of ashes and dirt from Mother Marianne's grave on her and prayed.

"I had never heard of her, but we continued to pray," Smith said. "And I just, I started getting better."

"I believe in miracles, but I don't know whether it was all the prayers, or the pinning of the relic, but I know that something worked and I'm here for some reason," Smith said.

The Vatican's complicated saint-making procedure requires that the Vatican certify a "miracle" was performed through the intercession of the candidate ? a medically inexplicable cure that can be directly linked to the prayers offered by the faithful. One miracle is needed for beatification, a second for canonization.

The other new saints are: Jacques Berthieu, a 19th century French Jesuit who was killed by rebels in Madagascar, where he had worked as a missionary; Giovanni Battista Piamarta, an Italian who founded a religious order in 1900 and established a Catholic printing and publishing house in his native Brescia; Carmen Salles Y Barangueras, a Spanish nun who founded a religious order to educate children in 1892; and Anna Schaeffer, a 19th century German lay woman who became a model for the sick and suffering after she fell into a boiler and badly burned her legs. The wounds never healed, causing her constant pain.
