Moto X preview: A Google phone assembled with you, the user, in mind

Moto X preview A Google phone assembled with you, the user, in mind

Motorola. A Google company. It's time to commit that to memory. With the Moto X, a 4.7-inch phone going on sale later this summer for $199 on contract, the company has officially started the shot clock for the "new Motorola"; this is the first Moto product designed from scratch with Google's direct oversight. And it shows, from the packaging to the messaging to the features aimed at mainstream users. Most importantly of all, there's Moto X's standout feature: personalization. We've been hearing for years from various OEMs that smartphones are a personal statement, a reflection of the individual, but aside from the occasional color option, the wallpaper and case have been the only real opportunities for personal expression. Well, you can kiss those days goodbye. Motorola's keyed in to a core part of the user experience -- self-styling -- and we expect its rivals to follow suit.

But all of that backstory can wait. We need to talk about the Moto X. The company never explicitly said so when it showed us the phone behind closed doors today, but this is clearly a mainstream phone (it's geared towards the "majority of users" several execs told us). To that point, its spec sheet and feature list (Touchless Control, Active Display, Quick Capture) won't dazzle the technorati. And, from what we can tell, it's not supposed to. To hear the company tell it, the Moto X's journey began one year ago with a whiteboard listing all of the most common user problems, ways to address those issues and a plan to get the device into as many hands as possible. You won't be able to assess that for yourself until the phone launches on AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular later this summer. For now, though, if our initial hands-on time is any indication, it appears Motorola's succeeded.

RadioShack Debt Gets Even Junkier

After markets closed last night, Standard & Poor?s downgraded the already junk-rated debt of RadioShack Corp. (NYSE: RSH) from ?CCC+? to ?CCC?. That?s eight notches below investment grade. S&P?s outlook on the company remains negative.

S&P said that the downgrade reflects the agency?s view that RadioShack could default within 12 months without a major turnaround or increased liquidity. We should probably count out more liquidity because lenders willing to front some cash to RadioShack are likely to be pretty scarce. And those that are willing will want a pretty steep premium, which will not help the company in the short term.

Earlier this year we closed our eyes and held our noses and put RadioShack on our list of the nine most promising turnarounds of the year. But we added as many caveats as we could stack up:

We would simply point out here that this is a situation where investors are betting with enough dollars that whatever turnaround plan that will be formalized actually works, or at least stops the bleeding. With a new solid CEO, our key-man concern is that RadioShack hired a guy with a drugstore background. Maybe it is that no one else was willing to gamble on a career here. We remain doubtful, unless RadioShack will open a prescription drug delivery service as well.

Shares are down about 10.4% in the early afternoon today, at $2.59, in a 52-week range of $1.90 to $4.28. That?s still a gain of about 36% from the low. It?s also about 40% below the high.

How CenturyLink and its largest union finally closed the gap

In early July, CenturyLink and its largest union didn't appear much closer to reaching a new pact despite holding nearly 100 bargaining sessions over more than 10 months, raising the possibility that thousands of workers would strike.

Then last week, top lawyers from both sides jumped into the mix, with the Monroe, La.-based company's general counsel, Stacey Goff, flying in to Denver for meetings with union attorney Richard Rosenblatt.

Their presence at the bargaining table was "very helpful" in moving the needle and setting the stage for the tentative agreement that was reached this week, said CWA District 7 spokesman Al Kogler.

"I certainly don't want to minimize the work of all the folks that have been pounding it out for the last almost a year," Kogler said Wednesday. "But sometimes when people that are little more detached and they can kind of take that 10,000 foot view, it can help to move things along."

The attorneys, along with the top two representatives from the respective bargaining committees, met several times last week.

"That was kind of what put the framework together and then they were able to come to agreement on all of the details (Tuesday)," Kogler said.

The multiyear contract, announced late Tuesday, will cover about 12,000 workers, according to CenturyLink. The CWA said 11,000 company employees in 13 states are members of the union, including about 2,000 in Colorado.

"Both sides have made concessions in order to reach agreement," CenturyLink spokesman Mark Molzen said Wednesday. "We are pleased that we have come to an agreement that provides our employees fair and equitable benefits and will better enable us to deliver on our mutual commitment to serve our customers."

Ballots for the ratification vote are due Sept. 27. The contract would expire in October 2017. The previous contract expired last October, though it has been extended on a temporary basis since then.

CenturyLink, the state's largest landline phone service provider, said the new pact would provide the company with operational flexibility, mitigate in-house pay disparities and offer employees pay and benefits that are more closely aligned with similar jobs in their markets.

CWA, meanwhile, said the deal "provides lump sum increases and wage increases" and includes a commitment from the company "to return jobs that have been outsourced and offshored." The union's membership covers call center operators, network technicians and other front-line employees.

Some of London's Gay Clubs Boycott Russian Vodka

The G-A-Y Group, which runs the famous Heaven superclub, is among those removing Russian products after President Vladimir Putin's government banned "gay propaganda" and cracked down on gay rights protests.

"As other countries move forwards (on gay rights), Russia is moving backwards," Jeremy Joseph, founder and owner of the G-A-Y Group, told AFP on Tuesday.

"It's important to show solidarity at a really hard time."

Joseph said he had asked his four venues, including Heaven -- which has a capacity of almost 2,000 -- to take Russian drinks off the shelves with immediate effect.

The Shadow Lounge, which calls itself "Europe's premier gay members' club", and Manbar in Soho said they were boycotting Russian vodka, both naming Stolichnaya as the main brand affected.

US writer Dan Savage called for the boycott last week, urging gay bars to "dump Stoli and dump Russian vodka" over what he called "Putin's anti-gay pogrom".

Christopher Amos, owner of Manbar, said the boycott call had "gone viral among the gay community internationally".

Stolichnaya has already responded to the campaign, issuing an open letter dated Friday condemning the "dreadful actions taken by the Russian government".

Val Mendeleev, chief executive of the SPI Group, which owns the brand, said: "Stolichnaya vodka has always been, and continues to be, a fervent supporter to the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.

"We also thank the community for having adopted Stoli as their vodka of preference."

He said the Russian government had no control or ownership over the brand, which originated in Russia but is now headquartered in Luxembourg.

Joseph said he hoped the boycott would prompt supermarkets to follow suit, and added that corporate sponsors of the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Russian resort of Sochi should also reconsider their position.

"Young gay men are being targeted, there's been murders -- there's no protection for them now," he said.

"You can attack a gay man in Russia and not face the consequences."

Compton's, one of many gay venues on central London's Old Compton Street, is taking part, and several of its neighbours said they were considering joining the campaign.

Reports indicate some US bars have also heeded the call, including in Chicago.

More than 1,300 people have signed up on Facebook for a gay rights protest outside London's Russian embassy on August 10.

Putin this month signed a law banning same-sex couples in foreign countries from adopting Russian children.

Last month the country introduced a law imposing jail terms for people promoting homosexual "propaganda" to minors, while dozens were arrested at gay rights protests for which authorities had refused permission.

Also in June, investigators said three men in the eastern region of Kamchatka were suspected of kicking and stabbing their neighbour to death because he was gay.

The murder came less than a month after a 23-year-old man was beaten to death and sodomised with beer bottles in an apparent homophobic attack in the southern city of Volgograd.
